Elefancia: Descenso

 

 

It may not be the easiest of associations to make - between metallurgy and all things orchestral - but Elefancia dares to do just that. Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Ives, Cage, Ligeti, etc.... You were once titans. But you've had your cigars, now welcome to the machine - of which you are mere ephemeral ball bearings and cogs, obliterated by friction into myriad sparks. Elefancia is the maestro here and perhaps gives new meaning to the term super-conductivity. As sure as the fabric of our universe is expanding, so too is the definition of what music is. Yet believe it or not, I was able to find traditional elements here that forge a balance between what is novel and what is familiar. Principia for example basks in the sonic glow of a minor seventh harmonic aura around a vaguely lilting augmented 5th that spins ears into a minor chord vortex. In Obtusas Devociones, there is low register melodic material and sporadic bass drum commentary reverberating against a vast noise quilt. Avande Capitale is an allegro episode for possibly - impossibly frenetic kitchenware which fades down a drain. Corpus Cristi is like a resurrection of the aforementioned pots and pans as they are reincarnated into other metallic found objects. Shakyamuni is a minuet for a cosmic lathe. Exodo leaves us with a denoument of low register string sounds that are gently embraced then gradually almost engulfed with the noise elements of yesterday, i.e. the musical elements of today.
